Coolant Fluid Flush

We are your one stop for Mercedes repairs, maintenance and services, since we are certified Import & European specialists. Linear Automotive only uses recommended factory OEM parts and fluids in their repairs and services. Linear Automotive provides your Mercedes with proper OEM recommended coolant or the original Mercedes Ultra-Long Life coolant. The replacement interval for newer vehicles since 2004 for this fluid is 150,000 miles or 15 years, whichever comes first. The dramatic change in the interval is due to new re-engineering of the cooling system and testing by Mercedes. Depending on your engine type and which vehicle, model and year, it may have an interval of 3 years. Some exceptions to his schedule is the 2004 and newer 6.0 liter V-12 bi-turbo engine has a 3 year coolant replacement schedule. Another exception is the 2005 SLR McLaren which has a 4 year coolant change. Linear Automotive knows your service interval and the proper OEM replacement fluids. We do not mix coolant brands and will flush your system before refilling.

The function of the coolant is to protect the vehicle’s engine from freezing, so it is still works and is drivable at cold temperatures. It also protects your Mercedes from boiling and keeps the engine from overheating. One of the biggest problems of the radiator is corrosion of the metals and eventually leaking. Mercedes does not use phosphate inhibitors that can produce electrolyte corrosion in the radiator. The phosphates tend to react with the calcium, magnesium and even iron in some waters. Some inhibitors Mercedes uses in their formula are borate and benzoate with the addition of benzo-triazole for protection of copper-brass with the addition of nitrate and nitrite which protects cast-iron liners in diesels. The Mercedes has a slow-release silica gel packet “refreshment” placed in the coolant reservoir for long life durability. The silicate gel is contained in a mesh plastic container or packet in the coolant surge reservoir and can be refreshed over the years. The silicate forms a protective coating as phosphates do and are considered an anti-corrosion coating. The addition of silicates, which provides a stronger coating, is non-reactive to hard water.

The coolant flows between the engine picking up heat and the radiator where it cools down due to the fan pulling air over the little fins as the coolant flows through the small tubes. Symptoms of low coolant can cause engine overheating since it is not receiving enough coolant to pull the heat off the engine. If the coolant is low it is either due to evaporation or leaks. If your Low Coolant dashboard light comes one, you may have a cooling system problem such as the coolant reservoir level sensor giving out, coolant leaks or a failing water pump. If you need to change your coolant type, the system will need to be drained and flushed and replaced with the Mercedes coolant or the OEM factory replacement coolant. The radiator will need to be examined, its condition and any corrosion, check any hose clamps, look for cracks, and any seepage in all seams. Another problem area can be the head gasket leaking coolant into the combustion chambers and then out the exhaust causing harm to the catalytic converter along the way producing a gray smoke.

A blend of coolant is to be premixed 50/50 prior to filling, because it is heavier than water and will settle to the bottom of the engine. It is said that water added after the coolant will not mix properly. Any corrosion protection will be lost due to the pockets of only water. The recommendation is then to only add the premixed coolant to the radiator at all times. Coolant comes in a variety of colors and the color is not a determinant to the brand or formula used. If the product formula is changed by purchasing another brand of the same coolant color, there may not be enough protection of the anti-corrosive properties in a blended coolant mixture. Linear Automotive has certified Mercedes technicians that can handle your coolant fluid replacement and coolant system examination.
